Unofficial MIAA Girls Basketball Power Rankings – January 13, 2023

Today is the day!

The first MIAA Basketball Power Rankings from Boys and Girls will be out sometime today. You should be able to find the rankings on the MIAA Power Rankings website here.

January 13, 2023 MIAA Girls Basketball Power Rankings Predictions

With the first power rankings coming out today, we get to see how close my predictions are. And my assumption is that it will be directionally accurate but may have some big differences. Here’s Why:

  • Teams with One Game
    • Brooke High School and Windsor Locks will play multiple MIAA teams but have played only one so far. Putting them into the formula doesn’t work well so I treated them like a One Off game with MOV counting and no Opponent Rating. I’ll update back in when the next game is played but unsure how MIAA will handle.
  • Scores Not in Arbiter
    • I’ve found a few instances where scores aren’t in Arbiter but I found girls scores in local newspapers (i.e Boston United playing in Winter tournament). I assume these games count but that isn’t definitive. I’ve included them in my calculations and included the source in the Scores spreadsheet below but unsure if the MIAA will.

Below you’ll find an update to both the Schedule and Scores sheet and the current projections.

Schedule and Scores

You can view the schedules and scores update here:

A few things to note:

  • Missing Games
    • I’ve included any games that I know have been postponed, canceled or moved. For games that have “Check the Score”, I either have an unofficial score or can’t seem to find the score in the newspapers or in Arbiter.
  • One-Off & Endowment Games
    • There are two tabs for both of these types of games. Endowment Games do not count toward the tournament power rankings. For “One-Off” games or games played against an opponent that doesn’t play another MIAA team, I’ve manually updated “Our Rating” to reflect the Margin of Victory based on the result. I’ve created another tab, “One Off Adjustments By Team” to show what I added or subtracted from teams playing these games.

Below are the adjustments that I’ve made to the spreadsheet formulas so far for One Off games:

Adjusted Girls Basketball Power Rankings & Brackets

This should show the updates to the rankings based on the scores above. A few updates were made here:

  • One-off Adjustments
    • I updated these to reflect the latest games to update the MOV for “Our Rating” for teams who played one off opponents (see above).
  • Future Opponent Ratings
    • I created a field in the Rankings for Future Opponent Rating. This averages the opponent ratings of all future opponents for teams to show how hard schedules are going forward. Obviously, this will change and update as games are played but can give a little bit of foresight in terms of how strength of schedule and potentially MOV will be affected for teams going forward.
      • This also doesn’t take into account end of season tournaments as the data on schedules for who is playing who is not yet available. So I would assume this rating to be higher than what is presented for anyone playing a postseason tournament.

Will be interesting to see how close it is to the official results.
