Below you’ll find an update to both the Schedule and Scores sheet and the current projections.

Schedule and Scores

You can view the schedules and scores update here:

A few things to note:

  • Missing Games
    • I’ve included any games that I know have been postponed, canceled or moved. For games that have “Check the Score”, I either have an unofficial score or can’t seem to find the score in the newspapers or in Arbiter.
  • One-Off & Endowment Games
    • There are two tabs for both of these types of games. Endowment Games do not count toward the tournament power rankings. For “One-Off” games or games played against an opponent that doesn’t play another MIAA team, I’ve manually updated “Our Rating” to reflect the Margin of Victory based on the result. I’ve created another tab, “One Off Adjustments By Team” to show what I added or subtracted from teams playing these games.

Below are the adjustments that I’ve made to the spreadsheet formulas so far for One Off games:

Adjusted Girls Basketball Power Rankings & Brackets

This should show the updates to the rankings based on the scores above. A few updates were made here:

  • One-off Adjustments
    • I updated these to reflect the latest games to update the MOV for “Our Rating” for teams who played one off opponents (see above).
  • Future Opponent Ratings
    • I created a field in the Rankings for Future Opponent Rating. This averages the opponent ratings of all future opponents for teams to show how hard schedules are going forward. Obviously, this will change and update as games are played but can give a little bit of foresight in terms of how strength of schedule and potentially MOV will be affected for teams going forward.
      • This also doesn’t take into account end of season tournaments as the data on schedules for who is playing who is not yet available. So I would assume this rating to be higher than what is presented for anyone playing a postseason tournament.

Official MIAA Power Rankings out on January 13, 2023

The official MIAA power rankings for Girls and Boys basketball will be out on January 13, 2023. I’ll still be updating the spreadsheets above throughout the season to see how close I can get it but you can see the official rankings at the MIAA Power Rankings website. These rankings will update bi-weekly.

A few things I hope we see this year include:

  • One Off Opponent Adjustments
    • I’d like to see what they include here and adjust for every team that plays one of these games as a note in the released rankings.
  • Release the Scores
    • I really hope they release all the scores that go into the ranking formulas to help understand what is missing and put pressure on those teams to enter scores into Arbiter. As of today, there are still teams that don’t have their schedules up to date and haven’t reported a single score.

Hope this is helpful and will be interesting to see how close the rankings above to the real thing. I’ll continue to update throughout the season and put the last update date especially closer to tournament time where daily updates make sense.

Will be interesting to see how close it is to the official results.
